The Christmas Tree

Every year I look forward to putting up Christmas decorations, usually the weekend after Thanksgiving. We don't do a ton of decorating, just a fake tree, the Willow Tree Nativity scene, and some simple lights outside. I feel like it is always a surprise to open the boxes of ornaments because I forget what they look like or mean. My parents bought several ornaments for me over the years that I still put up and I think it is fun to have the 1986 Precious Moment and the stained glass Disney characters to remember my early Christmases. We have already started the ornament tradition with Aria, picking an ornament series to get one from each year for her.

While my normal excitement was heightened this year to see how Aria would react to all the new things, I also had a slight sense of dread for how many, "Aria, no touch" comments I would make in a day. Well, the tree went up on Friday and Aria has done amazing! I overheard some friends talking about putting a few ornaments near the bottom that their young children could touch and wow did that ever work! When Aria got up from her nap and first saw the tree she was instantly excited and reaching for it. I put her down near the tree and she went for the soft ornaments at the bottom. Once she grabbed them, pulled them off and looked at the tree awhile, she moved on to other more important things like pulling all of her books out of the crate. Having a few ornaments that Aria can touch helped me relax from keeping her away from the tree and allowed her to enjoy it in a safe way.

We left out one other "decoration" that I didn't intend, but provided instant entertainment. I use an old popcorn tin to store some ornaments in and before it got put away Aria noticed it makes a great drum. It is also fun to roll across the floor and chase! What joy the holiday season brings!! :)

Thankful for Friends

Even though we should all be thankful every day of the year, tis the season to be thankful. Last Saturday we had the privilege of attending a birthday party for our great friends' 1-year-old son. The party included 8 families which brought 10 children under the age of 3 (and another on the way). It was an absolute blast! Near the end of the party we managed to get all but the sleeping 3 month old on the couch for a picture! Some of them even had their party favor sunglasses on! As I look at this picture, I feel so fortunate to have such great friends in our lives. We met all of these people at New Covenant Bible Church (for which I am also very grateful). All of these families (and a few more that couldn't attend the party, but whom I include as a part of this group) were without children when we met and new to their marriages. As you can see, we have all blossomed. I have really enjoyed growing my marriage, my family, and my relationship with Christ with all of these people. I love that we can gather as families, as women, or as men and find something in common. I love that these kids will be Aria's friends at church as she grows up. Being a stay at home mom, I am very grateful to these friends for organizing play groups and play dates, Bible study groups, and family get togethers. I would not make it on my own. I appreciate all the answers I've received from the moms with kids older than mine and I love trying to answer questions for those with younger ones. I know I could count on each and every one of these families to help us in any time of need and I would do the same for them. Friends, we are so fortunate to have you in our lives and I just wanted you to know that I am so very thankful for your friendship!

Announcing...

Aria's first tooth! It only took 9 months and 20 days, but the first pearly white has broken through! It hasn't been too bad at our house with this new foreign object, except for the diaper rash. Poor girl has it the worst. Otherwise she seems to be feeling the tooth a lot with her tongue, but has a fairly normal appetite and demeanor. I'm just glad to know I won't be needing to buy dentures for my toddler! :)

I tried to capture the moment...

There...can you see it? It is on her left.

An Official Crawler

So mommy's a little behind. It's been a little more than a month now since our little army crawler traded in the scooting on the stomach for the faster, more traditional type of crawling. She quickly added pulling herself up, learning how to get down, and cruising along the furniture to her repertoire! Here is a video of that evolution! :)

Baby's First Christmas

...is fast approaching! With all this amazing weather it sure doesn't seem like Christmas is a mere 6 weeks away. Plus, things go so fast around here with a growing and changing girl! I've been thinking a lot about traditions and how to start things off right since this is Aria's first Christmas. Of course she won't remember it at all, but I still want to "begin as we intend to proceed."

Christmas is an amazing time of year! Unfortunately for most, not for the real reason. Amidst all the shopping, Santa, stress, shopping, traveling, eating, decorating, shopping, etc. it is so easy to lose touch of reality. Christmas is the celebration of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus' birth. It really is that simple. God came to Earth, became man, and died for us so we could have eternal life. And, Christmas is the day we celebrate His entrance to the world. So why all the hullabaloo? I'm not exactly sure. Both last year and this year our church is on board with the Advent Conspiracy. I strongly encourage you to follow that link and watch the video. It is so very convicting. We are so blessed here in America. We spend thousands upon thousands of dollars on Christmas when just a few of those dollars would go such a long way in other places. Why not give it where it is needed?

Speaking of giving, I love to give gifts! I am generally way more excited to watch family members open gifts I give them then to open the gifts for me. I try to find gifts that have special meaning or are just a surprise. I'm not big on gift cards, making specific lists, or especially people knowing what their gifts are before they are unwrapped (even though I have been known to "discover" some of my own gifts in the past). However, sometimes I tend to go overboard and get caught up in how many gifts do I have for so and so instead of making sure they are meaningful. Justin and I have spent way to much on Christmas gifts for each other in the past and we really want to follow the Advent Conspiracy and spend less and give more worshipfully! I wasn't sure how this was going to work, setting limits or coming up with a tradition until last night.

I was out for dessert with a group of moms and a couple of them talked about giving 3 gifts for Christmas. Totally hit me square in the face. It goes something like this. "On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and of myrrh." Matthew 2:11 Shortly after Jesus was born, the Magi visited him and brought 3 gifts. This tradition is where the whole gift giving came from at Christmas. So why not continue? I found this website that describes the meaning behind the gold, frankincense, and myrrh more in depth. It is kind of a long description, so here is a quick summary. I think most of us probably get that gold is valuable and therefore is something we all "WANT." Frankincense was the resin from a tree. It was obtained by cutting the bark of the tree and letting the resin harden. It was then ground into a powder. Though it tasted bitter, it was known for how freely it burned, leaving nothing behind. This is symbolic of a life of holiness and righteousness. Therefore Frankincense represents a SPIRITUAL gift. Myrrh means “bitterness”. It was used in perfumes, but also when embalming the dead, and as an antiseptic or to reduce pain. Sounds lovely, but when you think of Christ dying for us, it kind of fits. Myrrh symbolizes suffering and tribulation, which we all know are a part of life. “Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” 2 Timothy 3:12. Therefore Myrrh respresents a gift we NEED. I LOVE this symbolism! It was the tradition I was looking for. Justin was immediately on board and we now know we will only be looking for 3 Christmas presents for each member of our household, something we each WANT, NEED, and a SPIRITUAL gift.

Lastly, there is the delicate topic of traveling and getting together with family to celebrate Christmas. I believe it is very important to gather with family and celebrate the birth of Jesus together. It is a time for worship, fellowship, and giving relationally. However, it is insanely hard to gather with all family in one day. Families are constantly growing and changing and generations are added. When marriages and births increase the number in a family, it isn't increased by just one, but by all the family on the "in-law" side. It is a delicate situation to try to make everyone happy. Once again, I return to the Bible. "The man said, 'This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, for she was taken out of man.' For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh." Genesis 2:23-24. This verse, very early in the Bible, presents the first family unit, husband and wife. On August 7, 2004, Justin and I became a family. A small family, but a family separate from anyone else. Of course we are very much still a part of our parents' families and our extended families, but we are our own family unit first. Call me crazy, but I think it is most important on any holiday that we celebrate together as a family of 3 first. Next up is our parents. I have awesome memories of going to grandma's house as a child and I can't wait for Aria to have those types of memories with both sets of grandparents! I'm not sure how it is going to work since Aria's grandparents live a little bit farther away from her than my grandparents lived from me, but we will find a way. I'm also not sure if we will do the same type of schedule every year, but I do know that our family of 3 will always come first.

However it happens, Aria's first Christmas will be a blast! I did already splurge on a personalized stocking for her, which is important to me for some odd reason, and we'll probably have to get a "Baby's First Christmas" ornament, too, but I am so excited to search for 3 meaningful gifts and to establish new traditions that I hope can continue throughout Aria's childhood.

Former Students

Once upon a time I was a teacher of mostly middle school students. I LOVED my job and the students I got to work with. I always took great pride in their achievements and I enjoyed when they shared about their extracurricular successes. As each year passed, students moved on to high school and new ones came in. I liked following my former students in their activities in high school and I still took great pride in reading or hearing about their achievements. Now, my first class of students are in their third year of college and I am no longer a teacher. But, thanks to facebook and cell phones I can stay in touch with many of them! Recently one of my former students told me that several of them read this blog! Hi! I can't say how excited I was to hear that my former students care about what is going on in my life as much as I do theirs. I feel honored and like I made a difference.

And, I have very talented former students! Just this year I have 11 former students who qualified for the All-State Music Festival! Way to go! I have had many more qualify in the past, too. One of my former students was Homecoming Queen this year, one placed 6th at the state cross country meet, and one was a part of a state championship basketball team last March! I have a former student who is an opera singer, one who is currently a foreign exchange student in Peru, and one is leading an upcoming missions trip at his church. I knew my students were talented when I had them in class in middle school, but I am always amazed at their accomplishments as they get older!

So to all my former students (all 238 of you), I miss you, thanks for reading my blog, and thanks for keeping in touch! I love hearing about your successes and seeing you all grown up! Keep it coming!
