The Great Bed Swap

I've had this pain in my hip for about three years now.  I thought it was just a pregnancy thing, but it hasn't really gone away.  My pain came mostly at night while trying to sleep.  My chiropractor and friend told me I needed to get rid of our waterbed.

Now, I loved my waterbed.  I don't think my parents switched me directly from crib to waterbed, but I got my first waterbed at a pretty young age.  I had slept on one (minus college dorms) ever since.  But, I figured it was worth it to get a good night sleep without pain in my hip.

We shopped around and found what we wanted with a Sealy iComfot memory foam.  It is glorious!  The pain in my hip isn't gone forever, but I no longer have issues sleeping.

This great purchase set in motion the great bed swap in our household.  Aria has been in her crib with the side off since about March.  She was beginning to show signs of outgrowing it...or she put so many stuffed animals in it there wasn't room for her.  Either way, we knew she couldn't sleep in a crib forever.  While shopping for our bed, we looked at things for Aria, too.  I found plenty I liked but didn't really want to spend the money.

We also had the problem of what to do with the waterbed.  They aren't very popular anymore and I wasn't sure if we could sell it.  I didn't want to put Aria in it, so we came up with a different plan.  When we got our new bed, we moved the waterbed downstairs to be our spare bed  and moved the spare bed (circa 1964 from my Grandma's house) into Aria's room, but not before painting it purple.

The bed frame didn't look the greatest, so we decided to spruce it up in Aria's favorite color and she was happy to help!

I "needed" her to help paint the boards that hold the box springs in the frame.  When she lifted up her shirt and started painting her legs with the brush, I decided that was time to stop.  She did have such a good time!

Aria was beyond absolutely thrilled to get a very big, big girl bed.  It is a full size bed so it should last her for a very long time.

After painting her purple bed, I decided we might as well redo her whole room in something she will like instead of the orange and basketballs I like.  She does like basketball, but purple is her thing.  So, we painted her room, too!  She also got to pick out her bedding set.  No surprise that it is purple.

My favorite addition to her room is this musical butterfly.  Aria's name means beautiful melody and that is what she has.  Okay, so she sings in a toddler voice, but she is a singer and absolutely loves music.  I wanted to find something to put on her wall to capture that love and I found this cool decal on etsy.

It was a crazy, fun transition from a nursery to a little girl's room.  I can't believe how fast she is growing up.  When I peek at her in that big bed, she looks so little and so big all at the same time.  Where will we be next time I blink?

PS: In other sleep related news, our big girl also no longer uses her pacifier when she sleeps.  Long ago, I began cutting the tip off piece by piece.  It got so small that Aria no longer put in her mouth to sleep, but still held it in her hand.  Well, when we got home from the Dells in August, I might have told a little white lie.  I told Aria I couldn't find the pacifier and we must have left it in the Dells.  She gave me the saddest look I've ever seen in my life so that I almost caved and gave it back to her, but 5 seconds later she could have cared less and just like that the pacifier is gone!!  HAPPY DANCE!

Tidbits

Hide and Seek

One of Aria's favorite games is hide and seek.  She's getting better about hiding quietly and waiting for us to find her, but she still often pops up before we "find" her.  She actually loves to count and come find us a lot more.  However, she has learned to get some help from our four legged friend who can sniff us out anywhere.  "Augie, where did Mommy go?  Can you find her?"  And the traitor-dog always trots right in to where I am.  NOT FAIR!

Sports

We've been to a few volleyball games lately of middle schoolers we know and a coach we know.  At one of the games I asked her if she liked volleyball.  Her response, "Yeah, but I like basketball better."  Score!  That's my girl!

Repeating

Aria repeats everything we say.  It is actually pretty cute because she usually adds more excitement to it than when we say it.  Apparently, she also repeats things she hears other people say.  The other day she told me, "Mommy, your hair is just like mine!"  We get a lot of comments about how her hair looks just like Mommy's.  She's listening.

Church Lessons

Lately the focus at church has been on the Creation story and more specifically that God made Aria.  Each week she's had a color sheet focused on a different body part that God made.  I assume they talk about God made your legs, what do your legs do?  My favorite comment out of all these lessons randomly one day, "Jesus makes our eyes pretty."  Why yes He does!

Crafts

A friend of ours posted pictures of a really fun craft she did with her daughter who is the same age as Aria.  It involved fall leaves and I thought Aria would love it, so I bought the supplies and gave it a try.  The idea is the put tissue paper on contact paper and then stick it on the window and the sunshine makes it look like stained glass.  I made some leaf shapes and cut small squares of red, yellow, and orange paper.  Aria's task was to put the tissue paper on the contact paper.

She did one leaf, but kept asking for the glue.  She didn't want the paper to be sticky already.  Then, when we ran out of tissue paper squares she saw me cut some more.  Apparently, cutting trumps any activity because she immediately wanted to cut.

Hey, cutting builds fine motor skills, right?  She did help put more tissue paper on more leaves, they just weren't nice little squares with her cutting skills.

I neglected to take a picture of our window of leaves, but you can kind of see the finished product as she puts it up here.  They are quite pretty and we did have a good time, it just took a little different direction than I expected.  Thanks for the creative idea Whitney!

If You're Happy

One of Aria's favorite singing activities is to make up different actions for "If You're Happy and You Know It."  While in the car I've heard, "If you're happy and you know it, clap the steering wheel."  At my parents' house, they made up (for their dog, CJ), "If you're happy and you know it, wag your tail."  But this morning takes the cake.  Over the monitor, as I'm finishing up my morning exercise routine, I hear, "If you're happy and you know it, go poop."  I have no other words.

Picnics

We've been having a lot of picnics lately.  No, not the pack a lunch and go to the park kind of picnics...

The kind where Aria spreads out a blanket in the living room, brings in a variety of dolls and stuffed animals, and sets up quite the meal for them.  Sometimes Mommy, Daddy, Grandma, or Papa are invited but other times it is just Aria and her friends.  It is rather adorable and a lot of fun to listen to from the other room.  She shops for groceries, cooks food in her kitchen, serves dessert, and cleans up the dishes afterwards.  If the picnic isn't in the living room, the "friends" often eat at the table with us, complete with silverware, drinks, and food.  And, don't you dare move any of their stuff because they won't like it at all!  I love the pretending and imagining and the life lessons I hear come out of her as she emulates me in preparing food for her animals and dolls.  What a fun stage of life we are in!

19 Colors

We only have 19 bottles of nail polish, so we had to use purple twice.

The Light

Last week Aria joined us in the regular church service instead of going to the nursery.  It turned out to be the perfect week for her to come because we sang one of my favorite songs, "You Never Let Go" by Matt Redman.  That song was my motto throughout our trials with infertility.  I posted about it here.  In case you don't want to go read that post from two years ago, the verse that I held on tight to is:

Yes I can see a light that is coming
For the heart that holds on.
There will be an end to these troubles,
But until that day comes,
Still I will praise You
Still I will praise You!

Of course the light that I saw was Aria.  But last Sunday I saw that light shine even brighter as Aria sang the song herself.  She stood there in the worship center and belted out the words right along with everyone else.  It was the cutest thing and the greatest thing I've ever seen!  I thought back to how many times I stood in church and sang that song with tears streaming down my face, hoping I would get to hold my baby someday.  And all of a sudden, I was standing there watching my baby (not so much a baby, though) sing that song!  She knew all the words, too.  Since then, we've had to "sing the 'Oh No' song together" as a family a lot.  She really got her mommy's love of music and I'm so glad she likes that song so much, too.

Thank you, God, for never letting go of me!  Please help me to teach Aria that you will never let go of her and when she faces troubles to look for the light, hold on tight, and praise You!

Mommy's Birthday

It was my birthday a week ago and I was greeted in the shower by "open the door, Mommy, open the door!"  When I did I heard, "Happy birthday!"  Then a minute later she was back, "Mommy hurry up with your shower so I can open your presents!  They're in the kitchen!"  Who said birthdays at 31 can't be fun!

We had a great little celebration putzing around on a pontoon boat in Lake MacBride!  Aria even got to drive!

It was Aria's first boat ride and she was a little cautious at first, holding on tight to Grandma.

Life jackets were required for those under 12, so naturally Papa wore one, too!  Actually, Aria requested he put it on.  Pretty sure he can't say to no to any of her requests.

And here is our cute family of three shot!

On our cruise we saw three deer, a family of five raccoons, a beaver house, a blue heron, several other birds, and some fish!  Then, when we got back to the beach, we saw the smallest and cutest turtle I've ever seen!  It was so fast and slippery.  It's shell wasn't even hard yet.  What a fun experience!

We finished our night by going out to eat and my ice cream cake didn't have Justin's name on it this year!  I am so blessed with a beautiful fun-loving daughter, husband, and parents!

At Julie's House

One thing I love about our church group and our close friends in our same life stage is taking care of each others' kids when appointments and such come up.  It really is awesome to trust Aria with other moms who have similar faith, values, and parenting styles.  Plus, she has fun with friends her age!

But just to put up fair warning, when kids come to Julie's house, they may or may not do things like color faces with chalk...

At least they erased, right??

Patience is...

waiting for a two-year-old to:
  • put on her own shoes
  • put on her own shorts
  • put on her own shirt
  • put on her own pajamas
  • take off her own shoes
  • take off her own shorts
  • take off her own shirt
  • take off her own pajamas
  • eat a meal
  • pick up her own toys
  • put away her own toys
  • climb into the car
  • climb into her car seat
  • buckle her car seat
  • open containers
  • close containers
  • get her toothbrush
  • get her toothpaste
  • open her toothpaste
  • brush her teeth
  • rinse out her own toothbrush
  • get a drink
  • be ready to be potty trained
  • follow instructions
  • say please
  • say thank-you
  • get out one fork at a time to set the table
  • walk into a store
  • walk around while shopping in the store
  • walk back out to the car
Basically, patience is letting my toddler do things herself because in the long run it will be beneficial for her to learn to do things for herself instead of having mommy or daddy do everything for her.  My list could go on and on and man oh man is it hard to wait sometimes.  So hard that sometimes I don't wait and I do things for her.  But she wants to do it herself and I want her to become independent.  So, I guess I'll keep on waiting....and I'll make sure to schedule extra time when getting ready to go somewhere!
